Caesar marches his legion across the Rubicon River in 49 BCE, igniting a civil war that will end the Roman Republic.
By crossing the Rubicon with his army — an act explicitly forbidden by Roman law — Julius Caesar committed himself to either seizing power or dying in the attempt. He defeated Pompey, became dictator, and fundamentally transformed how Rome was governed. The phrase 'crossing the Rubicon' still means passing a point of no return, and for good reason: the Republic never recovered.
