Welcoming strangers, travelers, and the marginalized — a core Christian virtue, not just polite entertaining
The Greek "philoxenia" literally means "love of strangers." Romans 12:13 commands believers to "practice hospitality." Hebrews 13:2 notes that some have entertained angels unaware. In the ancient world, where travel was dangerous and inns were rare, opening your home to a stranger could save their life. Modern hospitality preserves the same posture toward outsiders.
