The title for the queen mother of the ancient Ethiopian (Cushite) kingdom — a powerful political office, not just a ceremonial role
The Kandake (sometimes spelled Candace) was the queen mother who wielded real political authority in the kingdom of Meroe (modern Sudan). In Acts 8, the Ethiopian eunuch serves as treasurer to the Kandake, indicating a high-ranking court position. The title appears in ancient historical sources outside the Bible as well.
