Experts in the Mosaic Law — also called scribes or teachers of the law in the Gospels

Definition

In Jesus' day, lawyers (nomikoi) were specialists in interpreting and applying the Torah. Jesus criticized them for burdening people with regulations while neglecting justice and mercy (Luke 11:45-52).
