The supernatural gift of speaking in a language one has not learned — first poured out at Pentecost
Acts 2 records the disciples speaking in actual human languages so foreign visitors could hear the gospel in their own tongue. 1 Corinthians 12-14 treats tongues as one spiritual gift among many, with strict guidelines for orderly use in worship. Christian traditions disagree on whether the gift continues today, but all agree it is meant to build up the church, not impress observers.
