Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was a Renaissance astronomer and Catholic canon who formulated the heliocentric model of the solar system. His work De Revolutionibus challenged the geocentric view that had dominated for over a millennium. Far from opposing faith, Copernicus saw his work as revealing the order God had built into creation.
