Fourth-century scholar who translated the Bible into Latin, producing the Vulgate, which became the standard Western Bible for over a thousand years.
Born around 347 in Stridon, Jerome was one of the most learned men of the early church, fluent in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. He spent decades in Bethlehem producing his Latin translation directly from Hebrew and Greek sources rather than relying on earlier translations. The Vulgate shaped Western Christian theology, liturgy, and literature throughout the medieval period and beyond.
