Son of Seir — a Horite chief in Edom whose sister Timna married into Esau's family
Lotan was a chief among the Horites, the indigenous inhabitants of Seir (later known as Edom), listed in the genealogies of Genesis 36 and 1 Chronicles 1. He was a son of Seir and the father of Hori and Hemam, and his sister Timna became a concubine of Esau's son Eliphaz. His record preserves the lineage of the pre-Edomite clans who occupied the land before it was settled by Esau's descendants.
