Jacob's firstborn — lost his birthright for sleeping with his father's concubine

The eldest of Jacob's twelve sons through Leah (Genesis 29:32). He tried to save Joseph from being killed by suggesting they throw him in a pit instead (Genesis 37:21-22). But he lost his firstborn rights after sleeping with his father's concubine Bilhah (Genesis 35:22, 49:3-4). Jacob's deathbed blessing called him 'unstable as water.' His tribe settled east of the Jordan.
