A Babylonian settlement from which some returnees could not prove their Israelite ancestry
BabyloniaAddon (also called Addan in Ezra 2:59) was one of several Babylonian settlements from which Jewish exiles attempted to return to Judah after the decree of Cyrus, but whose families could not produce records proving their ancestral lineage in Israel (Ezra 2:59-60, Nehemiah 7:61-62). Together with Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, and Immer, Addon represents the broader diaspora that had been deported to Babylonian territory and resettled in named districts during the seventy years of exile. The exact location within Mesopotamia is unknown, but the place name reflects the practice of Babylonian authorities settling deportees in distinct colonies that retained their identity over generations.
