The hometown of Joseph of Arimathea — the wealthy disciple who claimed Jesus's body and laid it in his own new tomb
JudeaArimathea was a small town in Judea whose precise location is debated — most likely identified with Ramathaim-zophim, the birthplace of the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 1:1), about 30 km northwest of Jerusalem. The town is mentioned in the Bible only as the hometown of Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy member of the Sanhedrin who had secretly been a disciple of Jesus. After the crucifixion, Joseph boldly approached Pilate, asked for Jesus's body, wrapped it in clean linen, and laid it in his own newly-cut tomb (Matthew 27:57-60, Mark 15:43-46, Luke 23:50-53, John 19:38).
