The deep gorge marking Moab's northern boundary — Israel's first foothold in the Transjordan
East of JordanHistorically Verified
The Arnon is the modern Wadi Mujib in Jordan — one of the most dramatic canyons in the Levant. It's explicitly named on the 9th-century BCE Mesha Stele.
The deep river gorge cutting across the central Transjordan, forming the historical boundary between Moab to the south and Ammon/Israel to the north. Israel encamped beside the Arnon during the wilderness journey (Numbers 21:13), and Sihon's defeat opened the territory from the Arnon to the Jabbok for Reuben's inheritance. Aroer sits on its northern rim. Numbers 21 even preserves a fragment of an ancient war poem celebrating the conquest "from Aroer ... unto the Arnon." Centuries later, the Arnon became a frequent prophetic touchstone for Moab's borders (Isaiah 16:2; Jeremiah 48:20).
