MesopotamiaHistorically Verified
The site has been thoroughly excavated since the early 1900s. German archaeologists dug up the city walls, palaces, and temples between 1903 and 1914. It's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The original capital of Assyria on the western bank of the Tigris River, named after the Assyrian national god. Genesis 10:11-12 mentions Asshur (Assyria) and the cities Nimrod founded there — Nineveh, Calah, and the great city of Resen. Asshur served as the imperial capital from roughly 2000 BC until 879 BC when Ashurnasirpal II moved the seat of power to Calah. The site has been extensively excavated since the early 1900s.
