The principal Mediterranean port of Pamphylia — where Paul and Barnabas embarked for the return voyage to Antioch at the end of their first missionary journey
PamphyliaAttalia (modern Antalya) was the principal seaport of the Roman province of Pamphylia, founded by Attalus II of Pergamum in the second century BCE. It served as the gateway port for the inland highlands of Asia Minor. At the conclusion of Paul and Barnabas's first missionary journey, after retracing their route through Pisidian Antioch and finally preaching the word at inland Perga, they "went down to Attalia, and from there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had fulfilled" (Acts 14:25-26). The journey was a watershed — Paul and Barnabas returned home and reported "all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles" (Acts 14:27).
