A boundary marker in the tribal inheritance of Gad east of the Jordan
GileadBetonim was a boundary point in the tribal inheritance of Gad east of the Jordan, named in Joshua 13:26 in the description of the Gadite allotment: "And from Heshbon unto Ramath-mizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir." The site is identified with Khirbet Batneh in the highlands of Gilead about 5 km southwest of es-Salt in modern Jordan, where Iron Age ruins preserve the memory of the small Gadite frontier town. Betonim sat on the high plateau that formed the central spine of the Gadite tribal territory between the Jordan and the Ammonite border.
