A Levitical city of refuge on the wilderness plateau in the tribal territory of Reuben
ReubenBezer was one of the six biblical cities of refuge — the southernmost of the three east-of-Jordan cities (Deuteronomy 4:43, Joshua 20:8, Joshua 21:36). It sat on the high plateau of Moab in the territory of Reuben, providing a place of asylum for anyone who had killed accidentally. Mesha king of Moab claimed to have rebuilt Bezer in his ninth-century inscription on the Moabite Stone, suggesting it changed hands repeatedly between Israelite and Moabite control.
