The summer capital of the Persian Empire where Cyrus's temple-rebuilding decree was found (Ezra 6)
PersiaHistorically Verified
The modern city of Hamadan sits on the ancient site. It's been continuously occupied since antiquity, and Greek historians Herodotus and Polybius both described it as the Persian summer capital.
The summer capital of the Medo-Persian Empire, set high in the Zagros Mountains in modern-day Hamadan, Iran. Ezra 6:2 records that when officials searched the Persian archives for Cyrus's original decree authorizing the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple, the scroll was discovered "in the citadel of Ecbatana." That single archaeological detail in the biblical text matches the historical practice of Persian kings spending summers in Ecbatana to escape the lowland heat. Ecbatana was the original Median capital before Cyrus the Great absorbed it into Persia.
