Red Sea port — Solomon's gateway for fleet trade with Ophir
Red SeaHistorically Verified
The area around modern Eilat and Aqaba on the Gulf of Aqaba. Iron Age copper-smelting at nearby Timna and maritime trade evidence confirm a major port complex exactly where the Bible places it.
A port city on the northeastern tip of the Red Sea (Gulf of Aqaba), paired in scripture with neighboring Ezion-geber. Israel passed by Elath during the wilderness wanderings (Deuteronomy 2:8). Solomon built his fleet of trade ships there to bring gold from Ophir (1 Kings 9:26-28; 2 Chronicles 8:17-18). After centuries of contested control between Judah, Edom, and Aram, Rezin king of Aram finally captured Elath from King Ahaz, drove the Judeans out, and gave it back to the Edomites (2 Kings 16:6).
