The poetic name of Bethlehem from which Micah prophesied a ruler over Israel would come
Judea"Ephrathah" is the older, longer form of Ephrath — the ancient name for Bethlehem preserved in the patriarchal narratives and the Davidic family memory. The Davidic line traces its roots specifically to Ephrathah: Ruth and Naomi settled in Bethlehem, but the elders of the town blessed Boaz with the words "May you act worthily in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem" (Ruth 4:11), connecting his marriage to Ruth to the wider Ephrathite clan of the tribe of Judah. Centuries later, Micah preserved that ancient form of the name in his messianic prophecy: "But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days" (Micah 5:2). Matthew cites this verse as fulfilled in the birth of Jesus the Messiah (Matthew 2:6). Rachel's tomb on the road to Ephrathah (Genesis 35:16-19, 48:7) marks the historic boundary of the Davidic homeland, and Psalm 132:6 looks back to Ephrathah as the place where the Ark was once "heard of."
