A Judean fortress city where the angel of the Lord struck down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in one night
JudeaHistorically Verified
Excavated since 2009 at Tel Burna, with Iron Age fortifications and cultic remains found that match biblical descriptions of a Judean border city.
A fortified Levitical city in the Judean Shephelah (lowlands). Joshua captured it shortly after Lachish during the southern campaign (Joshua 10:29-30). Centuries later it joined Edom in rebelling against King Jehoram of Judah (2 Kings 8:22). When the Assyrian king Sennacherib left Lachish to attack other cities, he laid siege to Libnah next — and that's where the angel of the Lord struck down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in a single night (2 Kings 19:8-35), forcing his retreat. Hamutal, mother of two of Judah's last kings (Jehoahaz and Zedekiah), was from here.
