The mountain of curses — where Israel heard what happens when they disobey
SamariaHistorically Verified
Surveyed in the 1980s, when a possible early Israelite altar site was found — though scholars still debate what exactly it is.
A mountain north of Shechem in central Israel, directly across the valley from Mount Gerizim. Moses commanded that when Israel entered the Promised Land, the curses of the covenant would be proclaimed from Mount Ebal while the blessings came from Gerizim (Deuteronomy 27:13). Joshua built an altar on Ebal and carried out this ceremony (Joshua 8:30-35). It stands as a permanent reminder that covenant faithfulness matters.

Stay Locked In or Get Left Behind
Mount Ebal is the mountain assigned to the curses — standing opposite Gerizim, it gives the covenant's warning side a geographic form, making the choice between obedience and rebellion literally visible in the landscape.

The Comeback W That Changed Everything
Mount Ebal is the designated mountain of curses where Joshua builds the altar — its selection is intentional, placing the covenant renewal ceremony at the very location Moses prescribed in Deuteronomy 27.
