A coastal town in the tribal allotment of Asher in the western Galilee
PhoeniciaUmmah appears once in Scripture as one of the twenty-two cities in Asher's tribal coastal inheritance: "And then the coast turneth to Ramah, and to the strong city Tyre; and the coast turneth to Hosah; and the outgoings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Achzib, Ummah also, and Aphek, and Rehob: twenty and two cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher" (Joshua 19:29-31). The town occupied the Phoenician coastal plain between Achzib and Aphek — strategic terrain Asher could never fully wrest from the Phoenician city-states. Some scholars suggest Ummah is a scribal variant of Acco (the famous coastal port).
