Wilderness town whose people twice betrayed David's hiding place to Saul
JudeaHistorically Verified
Identified with Tel Zif about four miles southeast of Hebron. The modern Arabic name preserves the biblical form, and Iron Age occupation has been documented at the site.
A town in the hill country of Judah where David hid in the wilderness during his flight from Saul. The Ziphites twice betrayed David's location to Saul, leading to harrowing pursuits through the wilderness of Ziph (1 Samuel 23:14-29; 26:1-25). The town was listed in Judah's territory (Joshua 15:24, 55) and fortified by Rehoboam as part of his defensive network (2 Chronicles 11:8). Psalm 54 carries the superscription "When the Ziphites went and told Saul, Is not David hiding among us?"
