Stop Picking Sides and Check Yourself
1 Corinthians 4 — Servants of Christ, apostolic suffering, and Paul coming in hot

📢 Chapter 4 — Stop Picking Sides and Check Yourself 👀
has been addressing the mess at — the church was splitting into fan clubs over different teachers, acting like were influencers competing for followers. "I'm team !" "I'm team !" Meanwhile, was out here actually suffering for the while they were sitting pretty and judging from the sidelines.
In this chapter, lays down what it actually means to be a servant of , calls out their inflated egos with some devastating sarcasm, and then reminds them — with love — that he's their spiritual father and he's coming to visit soon. And they get to pick whether that visit is going to be gentle or not.
We're Just Servants — Stop Rating Us 🔑
starts by reframing how the should think about him and . They're not rival celebrities — they're servants with a job to do:
"Here's how you should see us — as servants of and stewards of the mysteries of God. And what's required of a steward? . That's it. As for being judged by you or by any human court? That's a very small thing to me. I don't even judge myself. My conscience is clear, but that doesn't mean I'm off the hook — it's the Lord who judges me."
And then he drops the punchline:
"So stop handing out verdicts before it's time. When the Lord comes, He'll bring everything hidden in the dark into the light. He'll expose the real motives behind people's hearts. And then — THEN — each person will receive their commendation from God."
The point hits hard: you're not qualified to rank God's servants. You don't know anyone's heart — not even your own. Only God sees the full picture, and He's the only judge whose opinion actually matters. Stop playing the role of a judge when you don't have the clearance. 💯
You Didn't Earn Any of This 🪞
pulls back the curtain on why he's been using himself and as examples this whole time:
"I've applied all of this to myself and for YOUR benefit, brothers, so that you can learn from us not to go beyond what is written — and so none of you get puffed up, picking one leader over another."
Then he drops three questions that should end the entire debate:
"Who says you're any different from anyone else? What do you have that you didn't receive? And if you received it, why are you flexing like you earned it yourself?"
That's the ultimate anti-flex. Every gift, every talent, every bit of spiritual insight you have — it all came from God. Boasting about it is like bragging about a gift someone else gave you. That's straight delulu. ✨
The Apostle Reality Check 💀
Now turns up the sarcasm to an absolutely unhinged level. The were acting like they'd already arrived — like they had it all figured out while and the other were out there getting wrecked for the :
"Oh, you've already got everything you want! You're already rich! You've become kings — all without us! Man, I WISH you actually were reigning, so we could share in it with you."
"Because here's what it looks like on our end — God has put us on display as last of all, like men sentenced to death. We've become a spectacle to the whole world, to and to people. We're fools for sake, but you? Oh, you're wise. We're weak, but you're strong. You're honored, and we're in disrepute."
"Right now — this very moment — we're hungry, thirsty, poorly dressed, beaten, and homeless. We work with our own hands. When people trash us, we bless them. When we're persecuted, we endure. When we're slandered, we appeal gently. We've become the scum of the earth — the refuse of all things."
The contrast is brutal. The were out here living their best life, treating church like a popularity contest, while the who brought them the were getting cooked for it daily. isn't asking for sympathy — he's holding up a mirror. Real service to doesn't come with clout. It comes with scars. 😤
A Father's Heart, Not a Hater's 🫶
After that intense reality check, immediately softens his tone. He's not trying to destroy them — he's trying to wake them up:
"I'm not writing this to make you feel ashamed. I'm saying this to warn you — as my beloved children. You might have ten thousand tutors in , but you don't have many fathers. I became your father in through the ."
"So I'm asking you — imitate me."
That's not arrogance. That's a spiritual father saying: I've shown you what faithfulness looks like under pressure. I've modeled humility, suffering, and service. Follow that example. There's a massive difference between a tutor who teaches you information and a father who shapes your character. was saying: I'm not just your teacher — I'm your spiritual family. 💯
Paul's Coming — Pick Your Vibe ⚡
wraps up the chapter by telling them he's already sent backup — and he's on his way himself:
"That's why I sent to you — my beloved and faithful child in the Lord. He's going to remind you of my ways in , the same things I teach everywhere, in every church."
"Now, some of you are acting arrogant, like I'm not actually going to pull up. But I WILL come to you soon — if the Lord wills — and when I do, I'm not going to check what these arrogant people are SAYING. I'm going to check their power."
"Because the kingdom of God isn't about talk. It's about power."
Then he closes with one of the hardest lines in any of his letters:
"Your call. Do you want me to come with a rod, or with love and a spirit of gentleness?"
No cap, that's a mic drop. isn't threatening violence — the "rod" is discipline, correction, the kind of confrontation that doesn't let you hide. He'd rather come gentle. But the get to decide which version of shows up based on how they respond between now and then. The kingdom isn't built on who talks the best game — it's built on who actually has the spiritual power to back it up. 🎤⬇️
