📢 Chapter 3 — The Blank Check From God 🧠

just became king. His father is gone, the throne is his, and the whole nation of is watching to see what this young king is made of. He's already making power moves — a marriage alliance with , massive building projects, a wall around . But the hasn't been built yet, so the real story is still unfolding.

What happens next is one of the most iconic moments in the entire Old Testament. God shows up and gives Solomon a blank check. What he asks for — and what he doesn't — tells you everything about who this king really was.

Solomon's Early Moves 👑

Solomon wasn't wasting any time settling into the throne. He locked in a political alliance by marrying Pharaoh's daughter and brought her into the city of David while he worked on finishing his house, the house of the Lord, and the wall around Jerusalem. The man had a whole construction portfolio going.

(Quick context: The Temple didn't exist yet. So the people — including Solomon — were still at "high places," which were hilltop altars. It wasn't worship — they were the Lord — but it wasn't the way things were supposed to be permanently. Solomon loved the Lord and walked in his father David's ways, but the high places were his one asterisk.)

Solomon went to Gibeon, the most important of those high places, and offered a thousand burnt on the altar. A thousand. This wasn't someone checking a religious box. This was someone who was all in. 🔥

God's Blank Check 💭

That night at Gibeon, God appeared to Solomon in a dream. And what God said was absolutely unreal:

"Ask what I shall give you."

That's it. No conditions. No menu. Just: what do you want? Imagine the God of everything giving you a blank check. Most people would be speed-running through their wish list — money, power, , long life, enemies taken out. Solomon went a completely different direction.

"You showed incredible, steadfast love to my father David because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart. And you've kept that love going by putting me — his son — on this throne.

But Lord, I'm basically a kid. I don't even know what I'm doing. And your people — the ones you chose — there are too many to count. So give me an understanding mind to lead them. Give me discernment to tell the difference between good and evil. Because honestly, who is capable of governing a people this great?"

No cap, that response is elite. Solomon didn't ask for a single thing for himself. He looked at the weight of what was in front of him, admitted he was in over his head, and asked for the one thing that would actually make him useful: . 🧠

God Said "Bet" ✨

God was genuinely pleased. The text says it straight: it pleased the Lord that Solomon asked for this.

"Because you asked for this — and you didn't ask for long life, or riches, or for your enemies to get what's coming to them — but you asked for understanding to discern what is right: I'm doing it. I'm giving you a wise and discerning mind unlike anyone who has ever lived before you, and unlike anyone who will come after you.

And because you didn't ask for it? I'm giving you all the other stuff too. Riches. Honor. No other king will compare to you as long as you live. And if you walk in my ways — keeping my commandments like your father David did — I'll give you long life on top of everything."

That's how God works. Solomon asked for the one thing that actually mattered, and God threw in everything else as a bonus. He didn't fumble the bag — he didn't even reach for the bag — and God handed him the whole thing anyway.

Solomon woke up and realized it was a dream. But this wasn't just a dream. He went straight to Jerusalem, stood before the , offered burnt offerings and , and threw a feast for all his servants. He knew exactly what had just happened. 💯

Two Moms, One Baby 😬

It didn't take long for Solomon's new wisdom to get put to the test. Two women came before the king with one of the most intense cases you'll ever hear.

Both women lived in the same house. Both had given birth within three days of each other. One night, one of the babies died. And that's when things got dark.

The first woman spoke up:

"My lord, this woman and I live in the same house. I had my baby while she was there. Three days later, she had hers. We were alone — just the two of us. Her son died in the night because she rolled onto him. So she got up at midnight, took my son from beside me while I was sleeping, and swapped the babies. She put her dead child at my chest and took my living son. When I woke up to nurse my baby — he was dead. But when I looked closely, it wasn't my child."

The other woman immediately fired back:

"No. The living child is mine and the dead child is yours."

"No, the dead child is yours and the living child is mine."

Back and forth, right there in front of the king. No witnesses. No evidence. Just two women and one baby and someone was lying. This was an impossible case — and everyone in the room knew it. 😶

The Verdict That Shook A Nation ⚔️

Solomon listened. Then he laid out the facts calmly:

"One says, 'The living child is mine and yours is dead.' The other says, 'No — yours is dead and mine is the living one.'"

Then he said something nobody saw coming:

"Bring me a sword."

A sword was brought before the king. The whole room must have gone dead silent.

"Divide the living child in two. Give half to one and half to the other."

The real mother's heart broke on the spot. She couldn't take it:

"My lord — give HER the living child. Please. Just don't put him to death."

But the other woman said:

"He shall be neither mine nor yours. Divide him."

And right there, Solomon had his answer. He pointed to the first woman:

"Give the living child to her. Do not put him to death. She is his mother."

That's wisdom. Not just knowing the right answer — knowing how to find the truth when it's buried under layers of deception. Solomon didn't have evidence, so he tested their hearts. The real mother would rather lose her child than watch him die. The liar didn't care.

All of Israel heard about this ruling, and they stood in awe of the king. Not because he was powerful. Not because he was rich. Because they could see that the wisdom of God was in him — and that wisdom produced . 👑
