My Gospel Came Straight From Jesus

Paul is writing to the churches in Galatia, and he is heated. Normally Paul opens his letters with a bunch of encouragement and thanksgiving — not this time. Something has gone seriously wrong. False teachers have infiltrated the Galatian churches and are telling new believers they need to follow the Jewish law on top of believing in Jesus to be saved. They're adding requirements to the Gospel that Paul never preached.

So Paul skips the pleasantries and goes straight to the point. This letter is urgent, it's personal, and it's one of the most important defenses of Grace ever written. He's about to lay out exactly who he is, where his message came from, and why anyone preaching a different Gospel is dead wrong.

Galatians 1:1-5 (ESV) Most ancient letters started with a simple greeting. Paul turns his into a theological statement before anyone even gets past the first sentence:

"Paul, an Apostle — not appointed by any human organization or human authority, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead — along with all the brothers and sisters here with me, to the churches of Galatia:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our Sins to rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen."

Right out the gate, Paul establishes two things: his authority came directly from God, and Jesus' sacrifice is what delivers us — not human effort. He's laying the foundation for everything he's about to argue. The Gospel is about what Christ did, not what we add to it. ✨

Galatians 1:6-10 (ESV) Here's where Paul drops the hammer. No "I thank God for you" — just straight to the problem:

"I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the One who called you by the Grace of Christ and turning to a different Gospel — not that there actually IS another one. There are just people messing with your heads, trying to distort the Gospel of Christ.

But even if WE — or an Angel from heaven — preached a Gospel different from what we originally gave you, let that person be cursed. I said it before and I'll say it again: if ANYONE is preaching a Gospel to you that contradicts what you already received, let them be cursed.

Am I out here trying to get human approval? Or God's? Am I trying to be a people pleaser? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."

Paul said it twice because he meant it twice. He's not being dramatic — he's drawing a line in the sand. The Gospel isn't something you can remix or add your own twist to. It's not mid content that needs an upgrade. It's the finished, complete message of Grace. And anyone — even an Angel — who tries to change it is cooked. That last line hits different too: you can't serve Christ and chase clout at the same time. Pick one. 💯

Galatians 1:11-12 (ESV) Paul makes his source crystal clear:

"I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the Gospel I preached to you is not something I got from any human source. I didn't receive it from a person. I wasn't taught it in a classroom. I received it through a direct revelation of Jesus Christ."

This is a massive claim. Paul isn't saying he learned the Gospel from the other Apostles and then passed it along. He's saying Jesus Himself revealed it to him. No middleman. No cap. This matters because the false teachers were probably saying Paul was just some secondhand messenger who got the message wrong. He's shutting that down completely.

Galatians 1:13-14 (ESV) To prove his point, Paul gives them his lore:

"You've heard about my former life. I was deep in Judaism — violently persecuting the church of God, trying to destroy it. I was advancing in my Jewish faith beyond everyone my age, absolutely obsessed with the traditions of my ancestors."

Paul wasn't some casual skeptic who eventually came around. He was the top-tier opponent of Christianity. He was out there hunting down believers with official authorization. The fact that THIS guy became Christianity's greatest missionary isn't something you can explain with human persuasion. Something supernatural had to happen. ⚡

Galatians 1:15-17 (ESV) And here's the supernatural part:

"But God, who had set me apart before I was even born and called me by His Grace, was pleased to reveal His Son to me so that I could preach Him among the Gentiles. When that happened, I didn't immediately go consult with anyone. I didn't go up to Jerusalem to check in with the Apostles who came before me. I went away into Arabia, and then returned to Damascus."

This is Paul's way of saying: my calling wasn't a career move and my message wasn't secondhand. God chose him before birth — that's Grace, not merit. And when the revelation came, Paul didn't run to the other Apostles for approval. He went to Arabia to process what God had shown him directly. His Gospel didn't come through a human chain of command. It came from the source.

Galatians 1:18-24 (ESV) Paul lays out the timeline to prove he's not making any of this up:

"Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him for fifteen days. But I didn't see any of the other Apostles — only James, the Lord's brother. (And before God, I am not lying about any of this.)

Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. The churches in Judea that are in Christ didn't even know what I looked like in person. All they kept hearing was, 'The guy who used to persecute us is now preaching the Faith he once tried to destroy.' And they glorified God because of me."

Paul is building an airtight case. He barely spent time with the other Apostles in those early years, so nobody can claim they taught him the Gospel. He even swears before God he's telling the truth — that's how serious this is. And the churches who'd heard of him? They weren't suspicious. They were praising God because his transformation was undeniable. When God does a glow up on someone's life, the people who knew the "before" can't help but glorify Him for the "after." 🙏
