You're Not a Slave Anymore — Stop Acting Like One

Galatians 4 — Adoption, freedom, and Paul begging his people to stop going backwards

6 min read

📢 Chapter 4 — You're Heirs, Not Servants 👑

is deep in his argument to the churches in , and he is not letting up. These people heard the , received , and experienced real freedom in . But now false teachers have rolled in telling them they need to go back and follow to really be saved — and some of them are actually buying it.

So does what does: he gets passionate, personal, and pulls out an Old Testament allegory to make his point impossible to miss. This chapter moves from theology to emotion to straight-up pleading. You can feel how much he cares about these people — and how frustrated he is that they're walking backwards.

From Slave to Son 🔓

starts with an analogy everyone in his world would have understood — inheritance law. A kid who's set to inherit everything is technically the owner of the whole estate, but while they're still a minor, they live no different from one of the servants. They've got guardians running things, managers telling them what to do. They're heirs in name but not in practice — not until the date their father set.

"That's where we all were. Before came, we were like children under guardians — enslaved to the basic principles of the world. But when the time was exactly right, God sent His Son. Born of a woman. Born under . Why? To everyone trapped under , so that we could receive as sons and daughters of God."

"And here's the proof — because you ARE His children, God sent the of His Son right into your hearts, and that Spirit cries out, 'Abba! Father!' So you're not a slave anymore. You're a son. You're a daughter. And if you're a child of God, then you're an heir through Him."

That word "Abba" is intimate — it's what a child calls their father up close, not a formal title from a distance. is saying the Himself is the proof that your status changed. You don't just follow God from the outside anymore. You're family. That's not a vibe — that's your identity. ✨

Why Are You Going Backwards? 🔙

Now shifts from theology to confrontation. And you can feel the frustration building:

"Before you knew God, you were enslaved to things that aren't even real gods. But NOW — now that you know God, or better yet, now that God knows YOU — how can you possibly turn back to those weak, worthless principles? You want to be slaves to that stuff again?"

"You're out here observing special days and months and seasons and years like that's what saves you. I'm scared that everything I poured into you was for nothing."

That line — "or rather to be known by God" — is one of the most important corrections in the whole letter. catches himself because he wants them to understand: this relationship didn't start with your effort. God chose to know you first. Going back to rule-following isn't just unnecessary — it's an insult to what God already did. 💯

Paul Gets Personal 🫶

Here drops the theological argument for a minute and just talks to them as a friend. You can hear his voice soften:

"Brothers, sisters — I'm begging you. Become like me, because I became like you. You never did anything wrong to me. You remember how I ended up preaching the to you in the first place? I was sick. My body was a mess. That could've been an excuse for you to look down on me or write me off. But you didn't."

"You received me like an of God — like I was Christ Himself. What happened to that energy? I know for a fact that back then, you would have literally gouged out your own eyes and given them to me if it would've helped. So tell me — have I become your enemy now just because I'm telling you the truth?"

That last question hits different. isn't being dramatic — he's genuinely hurt. He loved these people. They loved him back. And now they're treating honesty like hostility. Sometimes the person telling you what you don't want to hear is the one who cares the most. 🕊️

The Fake Love of False Teachers 🎭

calls out exactly what the false teachers are doing — and it's textbook manipulation:

"These people are hyping you up, but not for your benefit. They want to isolate you so that you'll start hyping THEM up instead. Look — being valued and affirmed is a good thing, but only when the motive is genuine. Not just when someone's in the room working you."

"My children — I'm going through the pain of childbirth all over again for you, and I won't stop until Christ is fully formed in you. I wish I could be there right now and adjust my tone, because honestly? I don't know what to do with you."

calling them "my little children" while describing himself as being in labor pains — that's raw. He's not their teacher from a distance. He's a spiritual parent watching his kids walk into a trap, and he can't be there to physically pull them out. The false teachers gave them clout. gave them the truth. 💔

The Allegory of Two Sons 📖

Now pulls out an Old Testament deep cut for everyone who thinks is the path to freedom. He basically says: you love so much? Let me show you what it actually teaches:

"You want to live under ? Then actually listen to what it says. had two sons. One was born to a slave woman — that happened through human effort, the natural way. The other was born to a free woman — and that happened through God's promise."

"Here's what this means: these two women represent two . The slave woman represents the from Mount Sinai — the one that produces slavery. That's Hagar. And Hagar corresponds to the present , because and her children are still living in bondage to the system. But the above? She is free. And she is our mother."

"Scripture says: 'Rejoice, you who never gave birth! Break out and shout, you who never went through labor! Because the desolate woman will end up with MORE children than the one who had a husband.'"

This allegory is dense but the point is fire: trying to earn your way to God through puts you in Hagar's line — the line of slavery. But trusting God's promise puts you in the free line. The children of promise always outnumber the children of performance. God's plan was never about what you could produce on your own. 🧠

Children of Promise, Not Slavery ⚡

lands the whole argument with a direct statement about who they are:

"You, brothers and sisters — you are like Isaac. You are children of the promise. And just like back then, the one born by human effort persecuted the one born by the Spirit. Same thing is happening now."

"But what does Scripture say? 'Get rid of the slave woman and her son, because the slave's son will NOT inherit alongside the son of the free woman.' So here's the bottom line: we are not children of the slave. We are children of the free woman."

isn't being harsh for no reason. He's saying that the system of earning God's approval and the system of receiving God's cannot coexist as equals. One has to go. And already told you which one wins — the promise. You're free. You were always meant to be free. Stop crawling back into a cage that already unlocked. 👑
