John 10 — The identity claim so fire people picked up rocks

So now Jesus looked at these so-called spiritual leaders and started telling a story about sheep, , and thieves. And He was NOT being subtle about who was who.

Skeptics often claim Jesus never said he was divine. The Gospels say otherwise — and the cultural context makes the claim unmistakable.

What followed was one of the most iconic identity claims Jesus ever made — and by the end of the chapter, people would be picking up rocks.
opened with a figure of speech about a sheepfold — basically a pen where sheep were kept safe at night:
Jesus said: "For real — anyone who doesn't come in through the gate but climbs over the wall is a thief and a robber. But the one who comes in through the gate? That's the shepherd. The gatekeeper opens up for him. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls each of them by name and leads them out. Once he's brought them all out, he walks ahead of them, and they follow because they know his voice. A stranger? They won't follow. They'll run from someone they don't recognize."
(Quick context: In first-century , shepherds literally knew each sheep individually. Multiple flocks would share one pen at night, and each shepherd would call out and only their sheep would come. It was personal.)
Jesus told this whole illustration and — says it plainly — they did not understand what He was saying. The religious leaders heard a nice farming analogy and completely missed that He was calling them out. 😬
Since they didn't get it the first time, spelled it out:
Jesus said: "I'm telling you the truth — I am the door for the sheep. Everyone who came before me claiming to be the way in? Thieves and robbers. But the sheep didn't listen to them.
Jesus said: I am the door. Whoever enters through me will be saved — they'll go in and out and find pasture. The thief only shows up to steal, kill, and destroy. I came so they could have life — and have it to the fullest."
That last line hits different. Jesus isn't some mid version of existence where you just survive. He's talking about — abundant, overflowing, more-than-you-thought-possible life. The thieves take from you. Jesus came to give to you. That's the whole contrast. ✨
Now shifted from " the door" to an even bolder claim:
Jesus said: "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. But a hired hand — someone who doesn't actually own the sheep — sees the wolf coming and dips. He abandons them and runs. The wolf attacks and scatters them. The hired hand bounces because he's just getting paid. He doesn't actually care about the sheep."
This was a direct shot at the religious leaders. They were supposed to be shepherding God's people, but Jesus was calling them hired hands at best — people who looked the part but would ghost the second things got dangerous. A real doesn't clock out when the wolf shows up. 🐑
Then went even deeper:
Jesus said: "I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me — the same way the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep.
Jesus said: I have other sheep that aren't part of this fold yet. I need to bring them too, and they will hear my voice. There will be one flock, one shepherd.
Jesus said: This is why the Father loves me — because I lay down my life so I can take it back up again. Nobody takes it from me. I lay it down on my own. I have the authority to lay it down and the authority to pick it back up. This is what my Father charged me to do."
There's so much packed in here. First, Jesus said He knows His sheep the way knows Him — that's the deepest possible relationship. Second, the "other sheep" were the — Jesus was already planning to bring everyone in, not just . And third, He straight up said His would be His own choice. No one would take His life — He would give it. That's not a victim. That's a King with a plan. 👑
These words caused a straight-up division in the crowd:
"He has a Demon and He's out of His mind — why are you even listening to this guy?"
But others pushed back:
"These aren't the words of someone with a Demon. Can a Demon open the eyes of the blind?"
Fair point. The evidence was right there. had just healed a man who had been blind since birth, and some people were still trying to write Him off as crazy or possessed. But others couldn't ignore what they'd seen with their own eyes. The kept making the accusations look ridiculous. 💯
Fast forward to winter. The of Dedication was happening in — that's Hanukkah, the festival celebrating when the was rededicated after being desecrated.
was walking through Colonnade in the Temple when the religious leaders surrounded Him:
"How long are you going to keep us guessing? If you're the Messiah, just say it straight."
Jesus didn't flinch:
Jesus said: "I already told you and you don't believe. The works I do in my Father's name — they testify about me. But you don't believe because you're not my sheep.
Jesus said: My sheep hear my voice. I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who gave them to me, is greater than all — and no one can snatch them out of the Father's hand.
Jesus said: I and the Father are one."
That's one of the most statements in all of . "I and are one." Not "I'm like the Father" or "I represent the Father." ONE. The security alone is — held in Jesus' hand AND the Father's hand. Nobody's snatching you out of that. And then He drops the identity bomb that would change everything. 🔥
The religious leaders immediately picked up stones to execute Him. , somehow still calm, asked:
Jesus said: "I've shown you many good works from the Father. Which one are you stoning me for?"
The audacity. They responded:
"It's not for a good work — it's for Blasphemy. Because you, a man, are making yourself God."
Jesus came back with their own :
Jesus said: "Isn't it written in your own Law, 'I said, you are gods'? If God called THEM gods — the people who received His word — and Scripture can't be broken — then why are you saying the one the Father set apart and sent into the world is blaspheming because I said 'I am the Son of God'?
Jesus said: If I'm not doing the works of the Father, don't believe me. But if I AM doing them, even if you don't believe me — believe the works. Then you'll know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father."
(Quick context: Jesus quoted 82:6 where God called "gods" because they represented Him. His argument: if Scripture used that word for human judges, how much more does it apply to the one God actually consecrated and sent?)
They tried to arrest Him again, but He walked right through their hands. They couldn't touch Him because it wasn't His time yet. Remember what He said earlier — nobody takes His life from Him. He lays it down when He's ready. ⚡

And people kept coming to Him. They started saying:
"John never performed a single sign, but everything he said about this man was true."
And many believed in Him there. No flashy miracles. No heated debates. Just the quiet confirmation that everything John the Baptist had been pointing to was standing right in front of them. Sometimes an incredibly powerful testimony isn't a sign — it's a fulfilled promise. 🫶
