📢 Chapter 20 — The Plot Twist Nobody Saw Coming 🌅
It was over. At least, that's what everyone thought. had been , buried, and sealed in a tomb. His followers were scattered, grieving, terrified. The movement was done. The story was finished.
Except it wasn't. Not even close. What happened next would become the most important event in human history — and nobody was ready for it.
The Empty Tomb 🌑
It was Sunday morning — still dark outside — when went to the tomb where Jesus had been buried. She wasn't expecting a . She was expecting to grieve. But when she got there, the stone had been rolled away.
She didn't go in. She just ran. Straight to and — completely shook:
"They've taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they put Him."
That's all she knew. The body was gone and nobody had answers. In that moment, the worst-case scenario just got worse. 😰
The Sprint to the Tomb 🏃
Peter and the other disciple immediately took off running toward the tomb. Both sprinting. And let's be real — John made sure to note in his own that he outran Peter. (Petty? Maybe. But also .)
John got there first, stooped down, and peeked in. He could see the linen burial cloths lying there, but he didn't go in. Then Peter showed up — and because it's Peter, he went straight inside. No hesitation.
He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth that had been on Jesus' head — not tossed aside randomly, but folded up neatly in a separate spot. That's a detail that hits different. This wasn't a robbery. Grave robbers don't stop to fold the laundry.
Then John went in too, and he saw the same thing — and he believed. Though says they still didn't fully understand the Scripture that said Jesus had to rise from the dead. They went home. Processing. 🤯
"Mary." 😭
Everyone else went home. Mary Magdalene stayed. She stood outside the tomb weeping, and through her tears she looked inside. Two in white were sitting there — one at the head and one at the feet — right where Jesus' body had been.
"Why are you crying?"
"They've taken my Lord away, and I don't know where they put Him."
She turned around and saw someone standing there. She didn't recognize Him. She thought He was the gardener.
🔥 "Why are you crying? Who are you looking for?"
"Sir, if you carried Him away, just tell me where you put Him, and I'll take Him."
Then Jesus said one word. Just her name:
🔥 "Mary."
That's all it took. She spun around and cried out in Aramaic — "Rabboni!" — which means Teacher. One word from Jesus and she knew. The voice that called her out of darkness was the same voice calling her name now. 🫶
🔥 "Don't cling to me — I haven't ascended to the Father yet. But go to my brothers and tell them: 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"
Mary Magdalene went straight to the with the message that would change everything:
"I have seen the Lord."
She didn't just see an empty tomb. She saw Him. Alive. And she became the first person in history to announce the Resurrection. ✨
Locked Doors Can't Stop This 🔒
That evening, the Disciples were together behind locked doors. They were terrified — afraid the same people who crucified Jesus would come for them next. The doors were sealed. Nobody was getting in.
And then Jesus was just... there. Standing in the middle of the room.
🔥 "Peace be with you."
He showed them His hands and His side — the nail marks, the wound from the spear. This wasn't a ghost or a vision. This was the same Jesus who died on that cross, now standing in front of them alive. And the Disciples went from terrified to overjoyed. 🔥
🔥 "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."
Then He breathed on them — and those words carry weight you can feel:
🔥 "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven. If you withhold forgiveness, it is withheld."
Jesus didn't just come back to prove a point. He came back to commission them. The mission wasn't over — it was just beginning. And now they had the Holy Spirit to carry it forward. 💯
Thomas Wasn't There 🫣
— one of the twelve, also called the Twin — missed the whole thing. He wasn't there when Jesus showed up. So when the other Disciples told him what happened, he wasn't having it:
"Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, put my finger in the wounds, and put my hand in His side — I will never believe."
Honestly? Fair. He'd just watched Jesus die. "He's alive" is not a casual claim. Thomas wasn't being difficult — he was being real.
Eight days later, the Disciples were inside again. Doors locked again. Thomas was with them this time. And again — Jesus appeared right in the middle of the room:
🔥 "Peace be with you."
Then He looked directly at Thomas:
🔥 "Put your finger here. Look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Stop doubting and believe."
Thomas didn't need to touch the wounds. Just being in Jesus' presence was enough. He responded with the most powerful confession in the entire Gospel:
"My Lord and my God!"
No hesitation. No halfway. Thomas went from "I won't believe" to the clearest declaration of Jesus' divinity in all of Scripture. And then Jesus dropped a line for everyone who would come after:
🔥 "You believed because you saw me. Blessed are those who haven't seen and still believe."
That's us. Every single person who has put their in Jesus without physically seeing Him — Jesus called us blessed. Right here. No cap. ✨
There's More Where That Came From 📖
John wraps up with a note that puts everything in perspective: Jesus did way more in front of His Disciples than what's written in this book. What we have is curated, not comprehensive.
Every story, every encounter, every moment was selected to make one thing clear — Jesus is alive, He is Lord, and that changes everything. 🔥
