Key Takeaways
Judas calling Jesus 'Rabbi' instead of 'Lord' while everyone else was heartbroken asking 'is it me?' is lowkey the most devastating detail in the whole chapter.

she poured her most valuable possession in worship while the Disciples did math on the price tag — Jesus said she'd be remembered worldwide. 2,000 years later, He was right.
Judas sold out the Son of God for thirty pieces of silver — literally slave prices — right after watching someone pour a year's salary on Jesus' head in pure devotion.
Jesus reframed the entire Passover around Himself — He was the lamb, His blood was the rescue, and every Communion since then points back to this one meal.
Jesus wasn't blindsided by any of this — He called out His own betrayal at dinner and walked into the darkest night of history with His eyes wide open.
📢 Chapter 26 — The Night Everything Changed 🌑
Everything had been building to this. had been teaching, healing, calling out the religious establishment, and warning His that something heavy was coming. Now it was here. The was two days away — the holiday where remembered how God rescued them from in . But this year, the rescue God had planned was going to cost everything.
Jesus asked his disciples to stay awake and pray with him. They fell asleep. When has God asked something of you that felt too hard?
Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss. What does betrayal by someone close to you feel like?
What happens in this chapter is the beginning of the end — and the beginning of something completely new. A plot, a betrayal, an act of nobody saw coming, and a meal that would be remembered for the of human history.
The Plot Drops 🗡️
finished His final round of teaching and turned to His with a statement that would've stopped anyone cold:
Jesus said: 🔥 "You know the Passover is in two days. And the Son of Man is going to be handed over to be crucified."
Just like that. No buildup. No softening the blow. He told them straight up what was about to happen to Him.
Meanwhile, across town, the chief and gathered at the palace of the . They were literally plotting how to arrest Jesus on the DL and have Him killed. But they agreed on one thing — "Not during the . We can't have the people riot." They were terrified of the crowd's reaction, which tells you everything about how much influence Jesus actually had. They didn't want a fair fight. They wanted a stealth operation. 🕵️
The Most Expensive Act of Worship Ever 💎
was in , at the house of the leper, just having dinner. A woman walked in carrying an alabaster flask of extremely expensive ointment — we're talking worth a whole year's salary — and she poured the entire thing on Jesus' head while He was reclining at the table.
The immediately started going off:
"Why would she waste that? That could've been sold for a massive amount of money and given to the poor."
Sounds reasonable, right? But Jesus saw it completely differently:
Jesus said: 🔥 "Why are you giving her a hard time? She just did something beautiful for me. You'll always have the poor with you, but you won't always have me. She poured this ointment on my body to prepare me for burial. And I'm telling you — wherever the Gospel is preached in the entire world, what she did will be told in memory of her."
Let that land. The Disciples saw waste. Jesus saw worship. She understood something they hadn't caught yet — that His time was almost up — and she gave Him the most extravagant thing she had. No cap, this woman's act of devotion is still being talked about two thousand years later, exactly like He said it would be. 💯
Judas Makes His Move 💰
Right after that beautiful moment, the narrative takes the darkest possible turn. — one of the twelve, someone who had walked with , eaten with Him, seen every — went straight to the chief .
"What will you give me if I hand Him over to you?"
They paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment, Judas started looking for the right time to betray Him.
Thirty pieces of silver. That was the price of a slave in the Old Testament. One of Jesus' own inner circle sold Him out for what amounted to pocket change. The contrast between the woman who poured out everything she had in worship and the who sold his teacher for a bag of coins is devastating. 💔
Setting the Table 🍞
On the first day of Unleavened Bread, the came to with a practical question:
"Where do you want us to set up the Passover meal?"
Jesus gave them specific instructions:
Jesus said: 🔥 "Go into the city. Find a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My time is at hand. I'm keeping the Passover at your house with my Disciples.'"
The Disciples did exactly what Jesus told them and got everything ready. Notice that phrase — "My time is at hand." Jesus wasn't caught off guard by anything that was about to happen. He knew. He walked into it with His eyes wide open. 🙏
"One of You Will Betray Me" 😔
That evening, sat down with the twelve. They were reclining at the table, eating together, when He dropped a bomb that shook the whole room:
Jesus said: 🔥 "I'm telling you the truth — one of you is going to betray me."
The were gutted. One by one, they started asking Him:
"Is it me, Lord?"
"Lord, it's not me, is it?"
The sorrow in that room was real. These were men who had given up everything to follow Him, and now they were terrified it might be them.
Jesus said: 🔥 "The one who dipped his hand in the dish with me — he's the one who will betray me. The Son of Man will go just as Scripture says He will. But woe to the man who betrays the Son of Man. It would have been better for that man if he had never been born."
Then — the one who already had the silver in his pocket — had the audacity to ask:
"It's not me, is it, Rabbi?"
Jesus said: 🔥 "You said it."
Everyone else called Him "Lord." Judas called Him "" — teacher. Not Lord. The distance was already there. And Jesus looked him right in the eyes and confirmed what they both already knew. That exchange is haunting. Judas was caught in 4K and still went through with it. 😔
The Last Supper 🍷
While they were still eating, took bread. He it, broke it, and handed it to His :
Jesus said: 🔥 "Take and eat. This is my body."
Then He took a cup, gave thanks, and passed it to them:
Jesus said: 🔥 "All of you, drink from this. This is my blood of the Covenant — poured out for many for the Forgiveness of Sins. I'm telling you, I won't drink this fruit of the vine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."
(Quick context: The meal already pointed to rescue — God saving from with the blood of a lamb on their doorposts. Jesus was reframing the entire meal around Himself. He was . His body would be broken. His blood would be poured out. This wasn't just dinner — it was the establishment of a between God and humanity.)
Every time believers share — the bread and the cup — this is the moment they're remembering. The night before Jesus gave everything, He sat with His closest friends, broke bread, and told them what it all meant. Not a ritual. Not a tradition. A sealed in blood that could be forgiven and that one day, they'd share a meal together again in the . 🫶
They sang a hymn together. Then they walked out to the . The longest night in human history was just getting started.
"Not Me. Never Me." 🐓
They were out past the city walls in the dark when told them exactly how the night was going to end:
Jesus said: 🔥 "Every one of you is going to fall away because of me tonight. It's written: 'I'll strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' But after I'm raised up, I'm going ahead of you into ."
Catch what He tucked into that sentence. In the same breath where He told them they'd all abandon Him, He told them where to meet Him afterward. He was already planning the reunion before the betrayal even happened. That's not a threat — that's a note dropped in the middle of the worst prediction of their lives.
wasn't having it:
"Even if everybody else falls away because of you — I never will."
Jesus said: 🔥 "I'm telling you the truth. Tonight, before the rooster crows, you'll deny me three times."
"Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you."
And every other in the group said the same thing.
Here's what's brutal about this exchange: Peter meant it. He wasn't lying or posturing for the group. He genuinely believed he was built different. The gap between who Peter thought he was and who Peter turned out to be at 3 a.m. is the whole tragedy of this chapter — and honestly, it's a gap most of us have never had tested the way his was about to be. 😔
Gethsemane 😰
They reached a place called , and told most of the group to sit tight:
Jesus said: 🔥 "Sit here while I go over there and pray."
Then He took , , and — the same three who had watched Him glow on the mountain — a little further in. And something shifted in Him that the writers don't try to soften. says He began to be sorrowful and troubled. This is the , and He was falling apart.
Jesus said: 🔥 "My soul is crushed with sorrow — to the point of death. Stay here. Stay awake with me."
Then He walked a little further, dropped face-down on the ground, and prayed:
Jesus said: 🔥 "My Father, if there's any way — let this cup pass from me. But not what I want. What you want."
(Quick context: "This cup" isn't Jesus flinching at physical pain. Throughout the , the cup is God's on — Isaiah 51:17 and Jeremiah 25:15 both hand it to the guilty to drink. Jesus was staring down the cup He didn't earn, filled with wrath that wasn't His, and He asked out loud if there was another way.)
There wasn't. And He knew it. But notice He asked anyway — face in the dirt, honest about not wanting it. Jesus didn't walk to the feeling nothing. He walked there in agony, having already told His Father the truth about how much He didn't want to. And then He went anyway. 🙏
That's the part people miss. that costs nothing isn't obedience — it's convenience. This cost Him everything, and He said yes with His face in the dirt.
Three Prayers, Zero Backup 💤
came back to the three He'd asked to stay awake with Him — and found them asleep.
Jesus said: 🔥 "So you couldn't stay awake with me for one hour? Stay awake and pray, so you don't walk into . The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
He went back and prayed a second time:
Jesus said: 🔥 "My Father, if this can't pass unless I drink it — your will be done."
Came back. Asleep again. Their eyes were heavy. So He left them there, went back a third time, and prayed the same words.
Three times. Same prayer. Same answer. Then He came back and woke them up for good:
Jesus said: 🔥 "Still sleeping? Still resting? Look — the hour has come. The Son of Man is being handed over into the hands of sinners. Get up. Let's go. Here comes the one who's betraying me."
Sit with the loneliness of this scene for a second. Jesus asked three of His closest friends for one thing on the worst night of His life: stay awake with me. They couldn't do it. Not once, not twice, but three separate times He came looking for company and found people who had checked out.
And He didn't rage at them. He didn't cancel the plan. He prayed the same until He had with the answer, and then He got up and walked toward the people coming to arrest Him. He carried it alone because that was always the assignment — but that doesn't mean carrying it alone didn't hurt. 💔
The Kiss 💔
He was still talking when showed up — one of the twelve — with a whole armed crowd behind him carrying swords and clubs, sent by the chief and the .
Judas had given them a signal beforehand:
"The one I kiss — that's Him. Grab Him."
And he walked straight up to and said:
"Greetings, Rabbi!"
And kissed Him.
Jesus said: 🔥 "Friend — do what you came to do."
Then they put their hands on Jesus and arrested Him.
There's no version of this that isn't devastating. Judas didn't point from a distance. He didn't send a description. He walked up to the face he'd looked at every day for three years, called Him teacher, and kissed Him — and used the most intimate greeting in his culture as the marker for a hit squad.
And Jesus let him. He called him friend, one last time, and let the man complete the betrayal. He'd already told Judas He knew. He'd already given him every off-ramp at dinner. Judas took none of them. 😔
Put the Sword Away ⚔️
One of the guys with wasn't going down quietly. He pulled a , swung at the servant, and took the man's ear clean off.
Jesus said: 🔥 "Put your sword back where it belongs. Everyone who picks up the sword dies by the sword. You think I can't call my Father right now and have Him send me more than twelve legions of angels? But then how would Scripture be fulfilled? It has to happen this way."
Then He turned to the mob:
Jesus said: 🔥 "You came out with swords and clubs to arrest me like I'm some kind of criminal? I sat in the teaching every single day and you never laid a hand on me. But all of this is happening so the writings of the prophets would be fulfilled."
Then every He had left Him there and ran.
Read that last line again. Hours earlier they had all said, out loud, that they'd die with Him. Now the field was empty. Every one of them gone. The prediction He made walking out of dinner came true before the night was even half over.
And notice what Jesus refused. He had the power to end this — 72,000 angels were one prayer away, and He said so out loud so nobody could later claim He was overpowered. He wasn't a victim of this arrest. He was the only person in that garden who could have stopped it, and He put the sword away instead. ⚔️
The Trial That Wasn't a Trial ⚖️
They marched to , the , where the and the were already assembled and waiting.
followed — but at a distance. He got as far as the courtyard, went in, and sat down with the guards to see how it would end.
Meanwhile the chief and the whole were hunting for testimony against Jesus that would justify the penalty. And they couldn't find any. after witness came forward and nothing stuck.
Finally two men stepped up:
"This man said He could tear down the Temple of God and rebuild it in three days."
That was the best they had. And it's a distortion — Jesus had said "destroy this temple and in three days I'll raise it up," and John tells us He was talking about His own body (John 2:19-21). They took a statement about His and repackaged it as a threat against the building.
Two things to hold here. First: this was a court that had already decided the verdict and was shopping for a reason. Second: was in the courtyard the whole time — close enough to see it, far enough to deny it. He came to watch the end. He had no idea he was about to become part of it.
"Tell Us Who You Are" 👑
The stood up, frustrated that nothing was landing:
"You have no answer? Don't you hear what these men are testifying against you?"
said nothing. Not one word. He let the accusations sit there in the open and refused to dignify them.
So played his last card and put Him under oath before God Himself:
"I charge you under oath by the living God — tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."
And that — that question — Jesus answered:
Jesus said: 🔥 "You said it. But I'm telling all of you: from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."
(Quick context: That answer is two Old Testament passages stitched together — Psalm 110:1, where the sits at God's right hand, and Daniel 7:13, where "one like a son of man" comes on the clouds and receives an kingdom. Jesus wasn't just admitting to being the Messiah. He was telling the men judging Him that the next time they saw Him, He'd be the one on the bench.)
Caiaphas tore his robes:
"Blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? You all just heard it. What's your verdict?"
"He deserves death."
And then it got ugly. They spit in His face. They punched Him. Some slapped Him and mocked:
"Prophesy for us, Christ! Who hit you?"
Here's what should stop you: they finally got their , and it was true. He is the . He is the Son of God. He said the only honest thing available to Him, knowing exactly what saying it out loud would cost — and they killed Him for telling the .
The men spitting in His face were mocking Him as a fake prophet. Meanwhile, in the courtyard right outside that room, a He'd made four hours earlier was coming true word for word. 😔
The Rooster 😭
was sitting out in the courtyard when a servant girl walked up to him:
"You were with Jesus the Galilean too."
He denied it in front of everybody:
"I don't know what you're talking about."
He moved toward the gateway, and another girl spotted him and told the people standing around:
"This guy was with Jesus of Nazareth."
He denied it again, this time under :
"I don't know the man."
A little while later the bystanders came at him directly:
"You're definitely one of them. Your accent gives you away."
And Peter broke. He started calling down on himself and swearing:
"I do not know the man."
And immediately — the rooster crowed.
And Peter remembered. Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times. He walked out of that courtyard and wept bitterly.
Three denials. Escalating every time — first a deflection, then an oath, then curses. This is the same man who said even if I have to die with you about six hours earlier. He didn't fail under torture. He failed in a courtyard, talking to a servant girl, because he was scared.
And here's why this passage is in your Bible instead of quietly edited out: Peter is the one who told it. This story only exists because the man it humiliates kept repeating it. He let the remember him at his absolute worst.
Because the story doesn't end here. The Jesus who predicted this denial had already told him where to meet up afterward — remember ? Peter's collapse was fully known, fully anticipated, and fully covered before he ever opened his mouth. That's not permission to fail. It's proof that failing isn't the end of the story with Him. 🕊️
