He's Not Here — He's Alive

This is it. The moment everything has been building toward. Jesus had been crucified, buried in a borrowed tomb, and sealed behind a massive stone with Roman guards standing watch. His enemies thought the story was over. His followers thought their whole world had just collapsed.

But Sunday morning was about to change everything — and not just for the people who were there. For all of history. The Resurrection is the single event that separates Christianity from every other belief system on the planet. If this didn't happen, none of it matters. But it did. 🔥

Matthew 28:1-7 (ESV) It was barely dawn on Sunday — the day after the Sabbath — when Mary Magdalene and the other Mary headed to the tomb. They weren't expecting a Resurrection. They were expecting a body.

Then everything went sideways. A massive earthquake hit because an Angel of the Lord came down from Heaven, walked up to the stone, rolled it back like it was nothing, and sat on it. Just casually sat on it. His face was like lightning, his clothes white as snow. The Roman guards — trained soldiers, armed to the teeth — were so terrified they literally passed out. Became like dead men. The guys who were supposed to guard a dead body ended up looking more dead than the body they were guarding.

The Angel turned to the women:

"Don't be afraid. I know you're looking for Jesus, the one who was crucified. He's not here — He has risen, just like He said. Come look at where He was lying. Then go, quickly, and tell His Disciples: He has risen from the dead, and He's going ahead of you to Galilee. You'll see Him there. I've told you everything you need to know."

The Angel said it so matter-of-factly. "Just like He said." Jesus had told them this would happen — multiple times. And now here it was, exactly as promised. 💯

Matthew 28:8-10 (ESV) The women left the tomb in a full sprint — terrified and overjoyed at the same time. Fear and joy hitting simultaneously. And then, on the way to tell the Disciples, Jesus Himself stepped into their path.

🔥 "Greetings!"

That's it. That's His opening line. He just rose from the dead and His first word is basically "Hey." They ran to Him, grabbed His feet, and worshiped Him. This wasn't a ghost. This wasn't a vision. They were touching Him. He was real, He was alive, and He was standing right in front of them.

🔥 "Don't be afraid. Go tell my brothers to head to Galilee. They'll see me there."

Notice what He called the Disciples — "my brothers." These are the same guys who abandoned Him, denied Him, scattered when things got hard. And the first thing the risen Jesus does is call them family. No cap, that's Grace in its purest form. ✨

Matthew 28:11-15 (ESV) Meanwhile, some of the guards who had been at the tomb ran into Jerusalem and told the chief priests everything that had happened. Every detail. The earthquake, the Angel, the empty tomb — all of it.

And here's where it gets wild. Instead of falling on their faces and repenting, the religious leaders huddled up with the elders, came up with a plan, and paid the soldiers a fat stack of money to lie about it:

"Tell people, 'His Disciples came during the night and stole the body while we were asleep.' And if the governor hears about it, we'll handle him and keep you out of trouble."

The soldiers took the money and did exactly what they were told. Think about how sus this story is on every level. Roman soldiers admitting they fell asleep on duty? That could get you executed. The only reason they'd say something that embarrassing is because someone was paying them enough to make it worth the risk. They were caught in 4K and chose the bag over the truth.

This cover story spread widely, but it never held up. You can't bribe your way out of a Resurrection. 🧠

Matthew 28:16-20 (ESV) The eleven remaining Disciples made their way to Galilee, to the exact mountain Jesus had told them about. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him — though some still doubted. And that detail is lowkey one of the most honest things in the Bible. Even standing face to face with the risen Jesus, some people hesitated. Faith isn't always instant certainty. Sometimes it's choosing to follow while your brain is still catching up.

Then Jesus stepped forward and said the words that would define the mission of the church for the next two thousand years:

🔥 "All authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make Disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

🔥 And I am with you always, to the end of the age."

That's the whole Gospel right there. Every word carries weight. "All authority" — not some, not most, ALL. In Heaven and on earth. There is no sphere of existence where Jesus doesn't have the final say. "Make Disciples of all nations" — not just Israel, not just your friend group, EVERYONE. "In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" — the Trinity, right there in one sentence. And then the promise that hits different from everything else: "I am with you always." Not "I'll check in sometimes." Not "Good luck out there." Always. To the very end. 🔥

That's how the Gospel of Matthew ends. Not with Jesus leaving — but with Jesus promising He never will. 🫶
