You gave them water for their thirst.

Forty years you sustained them in the wilderness. They lacked nothing. Their clothes didn't wear out. Their feet didn't swell."

He kept feeding them. He kept guiding them. He kept providing for forty years — down to their shoes not wearing out. That's not a God who quits on people. That's a God whose is unmatched. 🫶

After the wilderness, God delivered on everything He promised:

"You gave them kingdoms and peoples. You allotted them every corner. They took possession of the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan. You multiplied their children like the stars of heaven and brought them into the land you'd told their ancestors to enter and possess.

They went in and took it. You subdued the Canaanites before them and gave them into their hands — kings, peoples, all of it. They captured fortified cities and a rich land. They inherited houses full of good things, cisterns already dug, vineyards, olive orchards, and fruit trees everywhere. They ate until they were full. They got comfortable. They delighted themselves in your great goodness."

God gave them the ultimate . From slaves to landowners. From wandering in the desert to vineyards and orchards. Houses they didn't build, wells they didn't dig, trees they didn't plant. Everything was handed to them. And for a moment, it was good. ✨

The Cycle That Won't Stop 🔄

But then — the pattern that defines almost the entire Old Testament:

"Nevertheless, they were disobedient. They rebelled against you. They threw your law behind their back. They killed your Prophets — the ones who had warned them to turn back to you. They committed great blasphemies.

So you handed them over to their enemies, who made them suffer. And when they were suffering, they cried out to you — and you heard them from heaven. In your great mercy you gave them saviors who rescued them.

But after they had rest, they went right back to doing evil. So you handed them over again. Yet when they turned and cried to you, you heard from heaven. Many times you delivered them according to your mercies."

This is the cycle that played out over and over in the book of and beyond: blessing → rebellion → consequences → crying out → rescue → → rebellion again. They fumbled the bag every single time. Many years you bore with them. You warned them by your Spirit through your prophets. But they would not listen. So you gave them into the hands of the surrounding nations.

Nevertheless — in your great mercies — you did not make an end of them or abandon them. For you are a gracious and merciful God."

That word "nevertheless" is carrying the weight of the entire prayer. After centuries of rebellion, after ignoring after prophet, after every possible chance to — God still didn't wipe them out. Even in their own kingdom, with your great goodness surrounding them, in the large and rich land you set before them — they did not serve you or turn from their wicked ways.

Look at us. We are slaves today. In the very land you gave our ancestors to enjoy its fruit and its good gifts — we are slaves. Its rich produce goes to the kings you have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and our livestock as they please. We are in great distress."
