They went in and took it. You subdued the Canaanites before them and gave them into their hands — kings, peoples, all of it. They captured fortified cities and a rich land. They inherited houses full of good things, cisterns already dug, vineyards, olive orchards, and fruit trees everywhere. They ate until they were full. They got comfortable. They delighted themselves in your great goodness."

But after they had rest, they went right back to doing evil. So you handed them over again. Yet when they turned and cried to you, you heard from heaven. Many times you delivered them according to your mercies."

Nevertheless — in your great mercies — you did not make an end of them or abandon them. For you are a gracious and merciful God."

Look at us. We are slaves today. In the very land you gave our ancestors to enjoy its fruit and its good gifts — we are slaves. Its rich produce goes to the kings you have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and our livestock as they please. We are in great distress."
