"Now, therefore, our God — the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps Covenant and steadfast love — do not let all this hardship seem small to you. Everything that has come upon us — our kings, our princes, our Priests, our prophets, our ancestors, and all your people — from the time of the kings of Assyria until today.
Yet you have been righteous in all that has come upon us. You have dealt faithfully and we have acted wickedly. Our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers did not keep your law or listen to your commands and warnings.
Even in their own kingdom, with your great goodness surrounding them, in the large and rich land you set before them — they did not serve you or turn from their wicked ways.
Look at us. We are slaves today. In the very land you gave our ancestors to enjoy its fruit and its good gifts — we are slaves. Its rich produce goes to the kings you have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and our livestock as they please. We are in great distress."
