God Really Said "I Got You" and Meant It

Psalms 35 — David asks God to pull up and handle his enemies

5 min read

📢 Chapter 35 — When You Need God to Step In ⚔️

is going through it. People he used to ride for — people he literally and prayed for when they were sick — are now coming after him with everything they've got. False accusations, backstabbing, the whole thing.

This psalm is raw and unfiltered. It's a straight from someone who's been betrayed by people he treated like family, and he's asking God to show up, fight for him, and set the record straight. If you've ever been burned by people you thought were your people, this one's for you.

God, Pull Up ⚔️

David doesn't ease into this one. He comes to God with urgency — like someone calling for backup when they're surrounded.

"LORD, go to war with the people going to war with me. Fight the ones who are fighting me. Grab the shield. Pick up the armor. Rise up and come help me. Pull out the spear and javelin against the ones chasing me down. And tell my soul — say it so I can hear it — 'I am your Salvation.'"

There's something powerful about asking God not just to help, but to literally speak over you. David doesn't just want rescue — he wants to hear God say it. Sometimes you need God to remind your own soul who's really in charge. 🙏

Let Them Get What They Gave 🌬️

Now David starts asking God to deal with his enemies directly. This isn't petty — this is someone whose life is on the line.

"Let everyone who's trying to end me be put to shame. Let them be embarrassed and turned away — everyone scheming and plotting evil against me. Make them like dust in the wind, with the Angel of the LORD sweeping them away. Let their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD chasing them down."

David's not taking revenge himself. He's handing it over to God and saying, "You handle this." That's the difference between vengeance and . He trusts that God sees the situation clearly and will respond accordingly. ⚡

The Trap They Set Will Catch Them 🪤

David explains why he's so heated — these people came after him for absolutely no reason.

"They set traps for me without cause. They dug a pit for my life when I did nothing to them. So let destruction catch them by surprise. Let the very net they hid be the one that snares them — let them fall into their own pit."

Then comes the turn — from lament to praise, from pain to promise:

"Then my soul will celebrate in the LORD, rejoicing in His Salvation. Every bone in my body will say, 'LORD, who is like you?' You rescue the weak from the ones too strong for them. You deliver the poor and needy from the ones who rob them."

That last line hits different. God isn't just powerful — He's specifically powerful on behalf of the people who can't fight for themselves. That's not a flex for His own sake. That's love. 🫶

They Gave Me Hate for My Love 💔

This is the part that really stings. David wasn't just minding his business — he was actively good to these people. And they repaid him with betrayal.

"False witnesses came forward, accusing me of things I know nothing about. They gave me evil for good. My soul is empty because of it."

"But when THEY were sick? I wore sackcloth. I fasted. I prayed with my head bowed to my chest. I walked around grieving for them like they were my brother, my friend — like I was mourning my own mother."

"But when I stumbled? They celebrated. They gathered together against me — people I didn't even know were tearing me apart without stopping. Like crude haters at a party, they were grinding their teeth at me."

This is one of the most painful human experiences — pouring love into people who are just waiting for you to fall so they can laugh. David doesn't minimize how much this hurts. He brings the full weight of it to God.

How Long, LORD? 🦁

David's patience is running thin. He's not losing — but he needs to know God sees what's happening.

"How long, LORD, are you going to watch this? Rescue me from their destruction. Save my life from these lions. I will thank you in front of everyone — in the massive crowd, I will praise your name."

"Don't let my enemies celebrate over me — the ones who hate me for no reason, winking at each other like they got away with it. They don't speak Peace. They target the quiet ones, the ones just trying to live right, and they scheme against them with lies."

"They open their mouths wide and say, 'Aha! We saw it! We caught him!'"

The detail about them "winking" at each other is so real. These aren't open enemies — they're the ones whispering, plotting, and celebrating behind your back. Lowkey the most toxic kind of opposition. 😤

Wake Up, God — Vindicate Me 🔨

David gets bold. He's not being disrespectful — he's being desperate. And God can handle desperate prayers.

"You've seen it all, LORD — don't stay silent. Don't be far from me. Wake up! Rise up for my vindication, for my cause, my God and my Lord! Vindicate me according to your Righteousness, and don't let them celebrate over me."

"Don't let them say in their hearts, 'Yes — this is what we wanted.' Don't let them say, 'We swallowed him up.' Let everyone who's celebrating my downfall be put to shame. Let the ones making themselves bigger than me be clothed in dishonor."

David's asking for vindication — not revenge. There's a difference. Revenge is "I want them to hurt." Vindication is "I want the truth to come out." He's asking God to set the record straight. 💯

The Ones Who Are Really for Me 🎉

After all the pain, David ends by lifting up the people who actually have his back — and ultimately, by lifting up God.

"But the ones who are rooting for my Righteousness? Let them shout for joy. Let them be glad and keep saying, 'Great is the LORD, who actually cares about the well-being of His servant!'"

"Then my tongue will speak of your righteousness. I will praise you all day long."

The whole psalm moves from "God, fight for me" to "God, I will praise you." That's the arc of every honest prayer — you come in desperate and you leave reminded that God is still God, no matter what anyone else is doing. No cap. ✨
