📢 Chapter 5 — Sin Gets Evicted ⚡
is in the middle of his series of night visions — each one revealing something about how God is going to restore His people and deal with the mess that sin left behind. The exile is ending, the is being rebuilt, and God is making moves. But restoration isn't just about rebuilding walls. It's about cleaning house.
These two visions aren't about blessings or future glory. They're about — specifically, God's plan to purge sin from the land. And the imagery? Absolutely wild. A giant flying scroll. A woman stuffed into a basket. Winged figures carrying her away. This is writing doing what it does best: making the invisible visible.
The Flying Scroll of Judgment 📜⚡
Zechariah looks up and sees something no one expects — a massive scroll, unrolled and flying through the sky. The guiding him asks what he sees.
"I see a flying scroll — it's about thirty feet long and fifteen feet wide."
That's roughly the size of the porch of Temple. Not a coincidence. This scroll carries the weight of God's , and it's on a mission.
"This is the curse that goes out over the whole land. Everyone who steals will be cut off — that's on one side. Everyone who swears falsely by God's name will be cut off — that's on the other side. The LORD of hosts is sending it out, and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of the liar. It will stay in that house and consume it — timber and stones."
This isn't a vague warning. This is a heat-seeking . The scroll actively hunts down two specific sins: stealing and false oaths. One breaks trust with people, the other breaks trust with God. And the consequence isn't a slap on the wrist — it's total destruction of the household. The curse moves in, sits down, and takes the whole structure apart. God sees what's hidden, no cap, and He's not letting it slide. ⚡
Wickedness in a Basket 🧺
The angel tells Zechariah to look again. Another vision is coming.
"What is it?"
"This is the basket going out across the land. This is their iniquity — all of it."
Then the lead cover lifts, and inside the basket — a woman sitting there. But this isn't a literal person. The angel explains:
"This is Wickedness."
And immediately the angel shoves her back down into the basket and slams the heavy lead lid shut. Wickedness is being contained, sealed, and prepared for removal.
Then Zechariah looks up one more time and sees two women with wings like a stork, wind filling their wings, lifting the basket between earth and heaven. He asks the obvious question:
"Where are they taking it?"
"To the land of Shinar — to build a house for it. And when it's ready, they'll set the basket down on its base."
is where was — the place that represented humanity's rebellion against God from the very beginning. The symbolism is heavy: God isn't just forgiving wickedness. He's physically removing it from His people and sending it back to where rebellion originated. gets evicted from the land and relocated to the place most associated with opposition to God. This is in action — not just rebuilding, but deep-cleaning the whole thing. 🕊️
