Eridu may be the world's oldest city, founded around 5400 BCE — Sumerians literally called it the first city ever
Sumerian tradition said Eridu was where kingship first descended from heaven. Archaeological evidence shows continuous habitation from around 5400 BCE with increasingly elaborate temples built one on top of another. By our time period it was already ancient. Some scholars connect it to the biblical Babel — the parallels are interesting no cap.
