From roughly 600 BCE onward, thinkers like Thales, Anaximander, and Pythagoras started trying to explain the universe without just saying 'the gods did it.' This was happening at the exact same time Jeremiah and Ezekiel were prophesying in the Near East. Two completely different intellectual traditions were cooking simultaneously.
