Roman Census Under Augustus

Augustus conducted at least three major censuses during his reign to register citizens and assess taxes across the empire. Luke 2 references a census that required Joseph to travel from Nazareth to his ancestral hometown of Bethlehem, fulfilling Micah's prophecy about the Messiah's birthplace. Rome's bureaucratic machinery, designed purely for administrative efficiency, became an instrument of prophetic fulfillment.
