David came home to find his city burned, his wives kidnapped, and his own men ready to stone him — then he hit back so hard 💥
While David and his 600 men were marching with the Philistine army (long story — Achish was planning to bring them into the battle against Saul before the other Philistine commanders said no way), Amalekite raiders torched Ziklag and carried off everyone — including David's wives Ahinoam and Abigail. David's men were so devastated they talked about stoning him. He stopped, asked God whether to pursue, got the green light, and chased the Amalekites with his 600. Two hundred men were too exhausted to cross the Besor ravine and stayed with the supplies. The remaining 400 found an Egyptian slave the Amalekites had abandoned, who guided them to the raiders' camp. David recovered EVERYTHING — every wife, every child, every animal — and then divided the plunder equally between the 400 fighters and the 200 supply guards. He also sent gifts of the spoil to the elders of Judah, building the alliance that would crown him king.
David's been living with the Philistines on the DL, but when it's time to go to war against Israel, the Philistine commanders aren't having it. Achish vouches for him, but David gets sent packing — and honestly, God just saved him from the most awkward situation ever.
1 SamuelWhen You Come Home and Everything's GoneDavid comes home to find Ziklag burned and everyone kidnapped, his own men want to stone him, and he's at the lowest point of his life. What happens next is a masterclass in leading from rock bottom — turning to God first, recovering everything, and then making sure everyone eats equally.
