A person from Cush — the ancient kingdom covering modern-day Sudan and parts of Ethiopia, one of Africa's major biblical civilizations
Cush (also spelled Kush) appears over 50 times in the Hebrew Bible. The Cushite kingdom was powerful, wealthy, and militarily significant. Cushite pharaohs ruled Egypt during the 25th Dynasty, and Cushite warriors fought against Assyria. Moses married a Cushite woman (Numbers 12), and the prophet Amos compared Israel's relationship with God to God's relationship with the Cushites (Amos 9:7), placing them on equal footing in terms of divine care.
