The Greek word for "church" — literally "called out ones," referring to an assembly of people summoned together
Used 114 times in the New Testament. In secular Greek it meant a town assembly of citizens called out for civic business. The early Christians borrowed it to describe themselves — not a building, not an institution, but a people called out by God for His purposes. Acts 19:32 uses the same word for a chaotic mob in Ephesus; context determines meaning.
