A close relative with the right and responsibility to rescue a family member from hardship
The Hebrew "goel" — a family member who could buy back lost property, redeem a relative from slavery, or marry a widow to preserve the family line (Leviticus 25, Ruth 3-4). Boaz is the classic example. God Himself is called Israel's Redeemer.
