A Levite who led a rebellion against Moses — and the earth swallowed him for it
13 mentions across 5 books
Korah and his associates challenged Moses and Aaron's authority, saying 'You have gone too far! All the congregation is holy' (Numbers 16:3). God's response was immediate and dramatic: the ground opened up and swallowed Korah and his followers alive. Jude references this rebellion as a warning against challenging God-appointed authority. Yet remarkably, the 'sons of Korah' survived and later wrote some of the most beautiful Psalms (42, 44-49, 84-85, 87-88).
Korah is identified here as a Levite who already served at the Tabernacle but organized 250 community leaders to challenge Moses and Aaron's exclusive divine appointment to leadership.
The Job Description (Don't Touch What Isn't Yours)Numbers 18:1-7Korah's rebellion is invoked here as the reason these strict access boundaries exist — his unauthorized approach to the sanctuary is the cautionary example behind every 'or you will die' warning.
Reuben's Roster (and That Korah Callback)Numbers 26:5-11Korah's name here introduces the grace note in his story — his rebellion was fatal, but his sons were spared, a distinction that becomes part of the official census record.
