Merari

Merari is one of the three foundational Levitical clans — his descendants will later take on specific duties in the tabernacle, but here he simply anchors the third branch of Levi's line.

Merari appears here as a clan designation — the two sub-clans, Mahli and Mushi, are being enumerated as the families who will be assigned the structural, load-bearing responsibilities of the tabernacle.
