Son of Levi and grandson of Jacob, Gershon founded one of the three great Levitical clans that served Israel's worship. His descendants, the Gershonites, were assigned the sacred task of transporting the tabernacle's curtains, coverings, and woven hangings during Israel's wilderness journeys. He appears in the genealogies of Genesis, Numbers, and 1 Chronicles.
