Son of Levi and grandson of Jacob; ancestor of the Kohathite clan, the Levitical division assigned to carry the most sacred Tabernacle objects — including the Ark of the Covenant, the altars, and the lampstand — during Israel's wilderness march
Kohath was the second son of Levi and grandson of Jacob, making him one of the founding ancestors of Israel's priestly tribe. His descendants, the Kohathites, were entrusted with the most sacred duty in the wilderness: carrying the Ark of the Covenant, the lampstand, and the altars of the Tabernacle. He appears in genealogies across Genesis, Exodus, and Numbers, and is also an ancestor of Moses and Aaron.
