A mysterious priest-king from Abraham's time — the model for Jesus' eternal priesthood
Also known as King of Salem, Priest of God Most High
A king of Salem and priest of God Most High who appears briefly in Genesis 14, blessing Abraham after a battle. He receives tithes from Abraham and gives him bread and wine. He has no recorded genealogy or death — which the book of Hebrews uses to argue that his priesthood is 'without beginning or end.' Jesus is declared a high priest 'in the order of Melchizedek' — meaning an eternal, non-Levitical priesthood unlike anything in the Jewish system.

Melchizedek is introduced as the ancient priestly order Jesus belongs to — a pre-Levitical, mysterious priest-king whose existence proves Jesus' priesthood transcends Israel's entire sacrificial system.
The OG Mystery PriestHebrews 7:1-3Melchizedek is formally introduced in vv. 1–3 with his full résumé — priest-king of Salem, blessed Abraham after battle, received a tithe, and appears in Scripture with no recorded birth, death, or genealogy, resembling the eternal Son of God.
