The unnamed Levite from Judges 19 whose story triggered a civil war in Israel
An unnamed Levite from Judges 19 whose story is one of the darkest in Scripture. He traveled to Bethlehem to retrieve his concubine, and on the return journey they stopped in Gibeah of Benjamin. The men of the city surrounded the house demanding the Levite, and he sent his concubine out to them. She was abused through the night and died at the doorstep. The Levite then cut her body into twelve pieces and sent them throughout Israel, sparking a civil war against the tribe of Benjamin (Judges 19-21). The narrative is deliberately horrifying — the author's point: 'In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.'
