A Levitical town in the tribe of Asher given to the Gershonite Levites
GalileeAbdon was a town in the territory of Asher assigned to the Gershonite branch of the Levites (Joshua 21:30, 1 Chronicles 6:74). As one of the forty-eight Levitical cities, it served as a place where priests and Levites lived and ministered among their host tribe rather than holding an inherited territorial allotment. The site is commonly identified with Khirbet Abdeh (Tel Avdon) in the western Galilee about ten miles east of the coast and north of Acco. Some scholars connect the original Joshua 19:28 reading of "Ebron" or "Hebron" in Asher's town list with this same Abdon, viewing the variant as a scribal variation.
