A Simeonite Levitical town in the Negev — given to the Kohathite descendants of Aaron as part of the priestly inheritance scattered through southern Judah
NegevAshan was a town in the Negev allotted to Judah and then to Simeon within Judah's larger territory (Joshua 15:42, 19:7, 1 Chronicles 4:32). Most importantly, it was set apart as one of the thirteen Levitical cities given to the Kohathite descendants of Aaron — the priests of Israel — scattered through Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin (Joshua 21:16, 1 Chronicles 6:59). The list of priest-cities in 1 Chronicles 6 names Ashan among Beth-shemesh, Juttah, Hebron, Libnah, Jattir, Eshtemoa, Holon, Debir, Ain, and Anathoth — a chain of small towns from which the descendants of Aaron served Israel through the Levitical system. Its exact location is uncertain.
