Buz (Arabia)

Buz was an Arabian tribal land named in Jeremiah's prophecy of the wine cup of wrath: "Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the utmost corners" (Jeremiah 25:23). The name traces back to Buz son of Nahor in Genesis 22:21 — Abraham's nephew — whose descendants settled in the northern Arabian desert east of Tema. Job's youngest friend Elihu is identified as "the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram" in Job 32:2, locating the wisdom tradition of Buz in the same broad Arabian wisdom milieu that produced Job. Assyrian records mention a region called Bazu in northern Arabia that scholars connect to biblical Buz.
